Sleep Apnea can cause serious health problems, including:

  • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

Do you also know that 85% of those with Sleep Apnea are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed?

The only way to know if you have sleep apnea is to GET TESTED?

Sleep Apnea is a very dangerous disease affecting millions of people.  However, the only way to know that you have it is if you are tested for it. There are two ways to be tested for sleep apnea. The first way is a Laboratory Sleep Test, or Polysomnogram (PSG).  The PSG has been used since the 1970's to diagnose sleep apnea. A PSG is completed at a Sleep Laboratory and the patient is constantly monitored by a technician while sleeping. The PSG measures 16 different functions during sleep. It monitors a patient's brain activity (EEG), eye movement (EOG), muscle activity (EMG), heart rhythm (ECG), oxygen saturation, air volume from the mouth and nose, chest effort, and abdominal effort. The data is then analyzed by a sleep physician or pulmonologist and a diagnosis is made. The report then can be forwarded to a primary care physician or a dentist.             The second way to test for sleep apnea is with a Home Sleep Test (HST). The HST has not been around quite as long as the PSG, but it also allows for the diagnosis of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders without a Laboratory Sleep Study. A Home Sleep Study allows the patient to be tested in the comfort of the patients own home, without having to go to a Sleep Lab or hospital. When an HST is prescribed to a patient, the patient will take the device home, and wear it that night while they sleep. An HST is usually worn on the patients head, body, or arm. The next day, the patient will bring the device back to the doctor and the results of the test usually comes back within 24 hours. The report then can be forwarded to a primary care physician or a dentist.
